The Commissioner's Cup, introduced in 2021 as an in-season tournament held alongside the regular WNBA schedule, was designed to heighten competitive stakes and generate additional interest during the middle portion of the season. The Liberty earned hosting rights for the title game by finishing Cup play with a perfect 6-0 record in Eastern Conference qualifying games. Under a modified format introduced for the 2026 edition, the league shifted away from the previous ten-game qualifying schedule to a condensed round-robin structure. During a designated window from June 1 to June 17, 2026, teams played Commissioner’s Cup games only against opponents within their conference. With WNBA expansion to 15 teams following the addition of the Portland Fire and the Toronto Tempo, Western Conference teams played seven qualifying games, while Eastern Conference teams played six. The championship game carries a $500,000 prize pool, with players on the winning team receiving about $30,000 each and the winning head coach $10,000, while players on the runner-up team earn $10,000 each.
