Los Angeles singer seeks to overturn $6.5m assault judgment

Jermaine Jackson has asked a Los Angeles Superior Court to vacate a $6.5 million default judgment awarded to Rita Butler Barrett, who accuses him of sexually assaulting her in the spring of 1988. Barrett sued in December 2023 under California's Sexual Abuse and Cover-Up Accountability Act, also naming Jackson’s corporate entities. A default judgment was entered in May 2026 after Jackson allegedly failed to respond. In newly filed documents, Jackson says he was never properly served, denies intentionally evading the case, and disputes the allegations, arguing that the lawsuit and coverage harmed promotion of the biopic Michael, starring his son Jaafar.
