United States orders Anthropic to shut Fable 5

The United States government has ordered AI company Anthropic to take its advanced Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models offline over concerns about automated hacking capabilities. The directive followed internal federal security reviews that found Fable 5, launched on June 9, 2026 as a defensive cybersecurity tool, could autonomously execute code for offensive hacking. Investigators’ findings led to a mandatory recall on June 12 and a global shutdown of related APIs and interfaces. The decision, discussed at this week’s G7 summit with major AI leaders, also restricts foreign nationals’ access and has heightened international tensions over U.S. control of frontier AI.
