Los Angeles police release video of fatal dog shooting

Los Angeles – The Los Angeles Police Department has released body-worn camera footage showing an officer fatally shooting a mixed-breed dog during a weekend call in the Canoga Park neighborhood. The video shows officers approaching the apartment of owner Marie Marseille on Saturday and knocking on her door. When Marseille slightly opened the door, her dog Jameson, described as a golden retriever, Saint Bernard and poodle mix, poked his head into the hallway and barked. The officer wearing the camera immediately shouted at Marseille to secure the animal and then fired four shots in quick succession, killing the dog at the scene. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement on Friday evening that the footage was “disturbing and tragic” and confirmed she had agreed with the LAPD chief on the need for a swift public release while the investigation remains active. Bass voiced serious concern about the officer’s decision to use lethal force in response to the encounter and said city leaders are treating the incident with urgency. She directed the Police Commission president and the chief of police to conduct a comprehensive review of LAPD’s existing use-of-force policy for dog encounters, identify national best practices, and update training, tactics and policies to prevent similar outcomes in the future.
