United States orders global halt of Anthropic models

On Friday, June 12, 2026, the U.S. Department of Commerce, under the Trump administration, issued a national security export control directive requiring artificial intelligence startup Anthropic to immediately block foreign nationals from accessing its most advanced models. Because major cloud platforms cannot practically separate foreign from domestic users in real time, Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 systems were effectively shut down worldwide for commercial, developer, and consumer use. An investigative report on Sunday, June 14, 2026, reported that Amazon CEO Andy Jassy had warned senior U.S. officials about serious cybersecurity risks discovered while testing Anthropic’s Fable 5 model.
