Washington signs order mandating federal AI cybersecurity testing

Washington – U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order titled “Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security,” establishing a new framework for how the federal government engages with advanced AI developers to strengthen cybersecurity. Under the directive, leading AI companies are asked to voluntarily submit their most capable models to U.S. government agencies for cybersecurity testing before the systems are released outside the federal government. Departments including Treasury, Defense, Commerce, and Homeland Security are authorized to request access to these models, and developers will have up to 30 days to provide them for evaluation. The order formalizes a structured review process that had previously been handled through informal discussions between officials and companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Alphabet’s Google. The executive order also directs the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to issue guidance aimed at accelerating cyber defense efforts across civilian federal agencies. In addition, it mandates the creation of an AI cybersecurity clearinghouse to coordinate vulnerability discovery and information sharing between government bodies and private industry. By embedding AI-specific testing requirements and coordination mechanisms into federal practice, the administration seeks to address growing security concerns in Washington over the potential risks posed by powerful new AI systems, while continuing to engage directly with major technology firms on protecting critical digital infrastructure.
