United States awards SpaceX $4.16 billion surveillance contract

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Space Force has awarded SpaceX a $4.16 billion contract to develop a new constellation of satellites for the Space-Based Advanced Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI) program, which will track and monitor airborne threats, including advanced missiles. Described as one of the Space Force’s largest commercial procurements, the project is intended to deliver persistent global coverage that current ground-based systems cannot match. SpaceX will lead development of the system-of-systems architecture, integrating space-based sensors, secure communication links and ground processing in coordination with the National Military Space Intelligence Agency. The constellation is scheduled to be fully deployed by 2028 and will assume roles now performed by ground-based radar and long-range detection aircraft. WASHINGTON — The SB-AMTI effort forms a core element of the broader, multi-layered “Golden Dome” missile defense system, which has grown to an estimated total cost of $185 billion following a recent $10 billion funding increase to speed deployment of space-based capabilities. The new contract follows an earlier $2.29 billion award from the U.S. Space Force to SpaceX to build a secure, high-speed satellite communications network linking military sensors and weapons platforms worldwide, underscoring the Pentagon’s growing reliance on Elon Musk’s company for mission-critical space infrastructure. While SpaceX is the primary awardee for SB-AMTI, officials say the program uses a vendor pool structure, with additional contracts expected as the system expands to monitor moving airborne targets and address current surveillance blind spots.
