Witnesses told local media that the vehicle was overtaken by fast-moving water, flipped in the current and disappeared from sight; authorities later recovered the victim’s body. Reeves said the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has been activated and is working directly with local officials in Forrest and Lamar counties on logistics, safety protocols and community support. Although waters in Petal began slowly receding by Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service kept the Flash Flood Emergency in place through 10:00 p.m. local time and warned that saturated ground and standing water continue to pose serious hazards and could lead to additional flooding.
