GARDEN GROVE, California, May 23, 2026 — Authorities ordered more than 40,000 residents across six Orange County cities to evacuate after fire officials warned that a large industrial tank of the toxic chemical methyl methacrylate at a GKN Aerospace facility would inevitably fail. The incident began around 3:22 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, when Orange County Fire Authority crews responded to reports of a vapor release from overheated storage tanks at the Western Avenue site. Initial evacuations were scaled back after cooling efforts seemed to stabilize the tank, but officials reissued and expanded the orders Friday morning when a faulty pressure‑release valve prevented them from safely relieving pressure inside the 34,000‑gallon vessel, which held an estimated 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of chemical. Fire officials described methyl methacrylate as highly toxic, volatile and extremely flammable, warning that it can damage the respiratory system and irritate skin and eyes, and that in its current state it could trigger an explosion. Division Chief Craig Covey said the tank could either rupture and spill thousands of gallons of hazardous liquid into the facility’s parking lot or enter a thermal runaway that might ignite nearby fuel and chemical tanks. Authorities established evacuation centers in Garden Grove and Cypress, closed several Garden Grove Unified School District campuses and canceled key events at the annual Garden Grove Strawberry Festival. As crews used unmanned hoses and sprinklers to cool the tank and consulted outside experts for mitigation options, no injuries were reported and officials said the cause of the overheating remained under investigation, with evacuation orders still in effect early Saturday.
