The latest criticism follows weeks of back-and-forth between the player and the television analyst after the Celtics were eliminated from the 2026 NBA playoffs, surrendering a 3–1 first-round series lead to lose in seven games to the Philadelphia 76ers. In the immediate aftermath of that Game 7 defeat, Brown used a Twitch stream to allege officiating bias, claim that referees had acknowledged an agenda against him and accuse 76ers center Joel Embiid of flopping, remarks that led the NBA to fine him $50,000 for public comments about the league’s referees. Boston, United States — Smith subsequently addressed Brown’s post-elimination remarks on ESPN’s “First Take,” saying Brown needed to be quiet unless he wanted to be traded from the Celtics and questioning Brown’s description of the 2025–26 campaign as his favorite season despite the early playoff exit. Smith also highlighted the absence of teammate Jayson Tatum from Brown’s personal streams, a line of commentary Brown later dismissed as irrelevant. In a May 7 post on X, Brown said he would stop streaming if Smith retired from television. During his latest livestream, Brown played clips of Smith’s commentary and accused him of abandoning journalism in favor of unverified narratives designed for engagement, arguing that Smith’s retirement could encourage broader efforts to remove similar media figures and raise standards of accountability for televised analysis. Brown contrasted players’ contractual obligations to speak to the media with what he framed as opinion-driven programming by commentators such as Smith. Smith, who signed a five-year, $100 million contract extension with ESPN in March 2025, has not issued an official broadcast response to Brown’s most recent remarks.
