Washington — The U.S. Defense Department canceled this week the planned temporary deployment of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, roughly 4,000 soldiers, to Poland; officials said some unit elements and equipment were already in transit when the order arrived. Gen. Christopher LaNeve testified on Friday that the instruction originated from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth's office. The decision follows a broader force realignment announced two weeks earlier, including withdrawal of about 5,000 troops from Germany; parts of the brigade had held a May 1 casing ceremony and were preparing for a nine-month rotation. Lawmakers, including Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, said Congress was not notified, and Army officials confirmed the cancellation during hearings this week.
