A major wildfire in the Florida Everglades has burned more than 11,000 acres in western Broward County, about 20 miles northwest of Miami, as of Tuesday, May 12, 2026. The Max Road Fire, which began Sunday near Mack's Fish Camp, spread quickly through dry brush under severe to extreme drought conditions affecting 82 percent of Florida, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. The blaze reached 80 percent containment by Tuesday, while a separate 172nd Avenue Fire near Florida City burned about 300 acres at 50 percent containment. Authorities issued air quality alerts and staged fire-rescue units near residential areas, but no evacuations were ordered.
