San Francisco — On Sunday the San Francisco Giants optioned relievers Ryan Walker and Gregory Santos to Triple-A Sacramento, recalled right-hander Dylan Smith and activated left-hander Sam Hentges from a rehabilitation assignment. Walker, who began the season as the team's primary closer after 17 saves last year, was demoted after a series of ineffective appearances that raised his season ERA to 6.46. The roster moves followed a 13-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday in which Walker allowed two runs while retiring two batters; over his past four outings he yielded seven runs, nine hits and four walks. Manager remarks reported that the team hopes a minor-league stint will help Walker regain confidence; Santos was optioned and Hentges' return provides additional left-handed bullpen depth for upcoming games.
