United flight clips pole over Turnpike, lands safely

Newark, New Jersey — On Sunday afternoon, United Airlines Flight 169, a Boeing 767-400 carrying 221 passengers and 10 crew from Venice, contacted a light pole over the southbound New Jersey Turnpike during final approach to Newark Liberty International Airport and completed a safe landing, officials and the airline reported. Authorities including the New Jersey State Police, Port Authority and the Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft’s landing tire and underside struck a tractor-trailer and a light pole at about 1:58 p.m.; the truck driver was transported with minor injuries, the aircraft taxied to the gate, and United has begun maintenance checks while regulators investigate this week.
