Washington — On Friday the Pentagon announced that the United States will withdraw 5,000 troops from its forces stationed in Germany, with Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell saying the move will be completed within six to 12 months following a review of U.S. military posture in Europe and exchanges earlier this week between President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. This week NATO said it was working with Washington to understand the reduction, and German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius described the move as foreseeable while announcing Germany will expand its armed forces and accelerate procurement; allied coordination with Britain, France, Poland and Italy was reported as officials assess operational impacts as the withdrawal proceeds.
