Washington — US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he will increase tariffs on cars and trucks from the European Union to 25 percent next week, up from a previously agreed 15 percent ceiling, and reiterated that vehicles produced in US plants would not face the tariff in a social media post. Brussels and EU industry groups rebuked the announcement on Friday, and a European economist urged retaliatory tariffs; Trump told reporters the hike would pressure automakers to shift production to US facilities more quickly. Earlier this year the US Supreme Court limited the legal authority for some tariffs, and the administration currently applies a 10 percent tax while seeking alternatives.
