Silver Spring, Nev. A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck a rural area east of Carson City just before 6:30 p.m. Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, placing the epicenter about 12.9 miles (20.7 kilometers) east of Silver Springs at an estimated depth of 3.1 miles (5 kilometers). Residents in nearby communities reported strong to very strong shaking. Lyon County activated ShakeAlert notifications Monday evening and said initial reports indicate light to moderate damage while no significant injuries have been confirmed; video from Fallon showed broken storefront glass and scattered goods. The USGS recorded aftershocks between magnitudes 2.5 and 3.6, and local authorities said teams will continue systematic damage assessments in the coming days.
