Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger signed multiple gun-control measures last week, including SB 749, which the General Assembly passed and which would make it a crime to purchase or sell AR-15 rifles. Spanberger said on X that as a former federal law enforcement officer public safety is personal to her and she signed bills led by both parties to protect children, support law enforcement and prevent gun violence. In a separate letter to Spanberger, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division warned the department would file suit and seek injunctions if the governor signs laws it views as restricting Second Amendment rights. Dhillon said Virginia residents are on notice that the DOJ will act to uphold the constitutional right to acquire arms possessed by millions of Americans.
