Artemis II astronauts safely back on Earth after trip around moon
NASA’s Orion capsule Integrity returned with four astronauts after nearly 10 days in space, splashing down in calm Pacific waters off Southern California shortly after 5 pm PT. Artemis II, the first human voyage near the moon in over half a century, traveled 694,392 miles, executed a far side flyby, and reached 252,756 miles from Earth, surpassing Apollo 13's 1970 mark. Following a white knuckle 13 minute reentry, parachutes slowed the capsule to about 15 mph. Recovery crews converged as more than 3 million watched online, capping a successful SLS and Orion test ahead of lunar landings starting in 2028.
