Washington — The Trump administration announced Tuesday it will withhold federal SNAP funding from Democratic-led states next week unless they provide requested recipient data. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins told a Cabinet meeting the department seeks names, Social Security numbers and immigration status to identify fraud. Twenty-two states and the District of Columbia sued and a federal judge issued an injunction in October; USDA says red states complied. About 42 million Americans use SNAP and average monthly benefits equal about $190 per person. The administration set a Dec. 8 deadline. Based on 11 articles reviewed and supporting research.

The federal administration and USDA stand to gain leverage for fraud investigations and policy enforcement, and states that comply with the data request will avoid loss of federal administrative funding.
Low-income SNAP recipients and state agencies resisting the request risk administrative disruptions, increased litigation costs and potential delays in program operations due to withheld administrative funds.
