The Transportation Security Administration said Monday it will begin charging air travelers $45 on February 1 if their IDs don’t meet stricter federal standards. The agency began enforcing REAL ID in May 2025 but initially relied on warnings and enhanced screening for those without the new credentials. Officials said they will urge passengers to obtain REAL IDs or pay the fee before arriving at the airport. The $45 charge covers a 10-day period. A previously discussed $18 option, announced November 20, was raised after costs came in higher than expected.
