Lions lose LaPorta for season after back surgery

ALLEN PARK, Mich. The Detroit Lions announced Friday that tight end Sam LaPorta underwent back surgery and is unlikely to return this season, coach Dan Campbell said. LaPorta, placed on injured reserve Nov. 15 after missing practice and the 16-9 loss at Philadelphia, had 40 catches for 489 yards and three touchdowns through nine games. Brock Wright will step into the starting tight end role. Coaches and medical staff will monitor his progress.
