PHOENIX: A bipartisan House bill would bar CHIPS Act grant recipients from buying Chinese chipmaking equipment for 10 years, targeting lithography and wafer-slicing tools. The proposal, introduced by Rep. Jay Obernolte and Rep. Zoe Lofgren, will be introduced in the Senate in December by Sens. Mark Kelly and Marsha Blackburn. It also covers equipment from Iran, Russia and North Korea, with waivers if specific tools are not produced in the U.S. or allied countries. The measure applies only to U.S. imports, not overseas operations, amid industry concerns over export curbs and China’s investment of more than $40 billion in manufacturing equipment.
