Tom Steyer enters California governor race touting affordability

Tom Steyer, the billionaire Democratic activist and former presidential candidate, jumped into California’s governor’s race Wednesday, centering his bid on affordability and a tougher line on corporations. He stoked speculation last month by putting $12 million behind Proposition 50, which passed and lets Democrats redraw the state’s congressional map. Steyer joins a crowded field with no clear favorite after Kamala Harris and Alex Padilla declined to run, including Xavier Becerra, Katie Porter, Antonio Villaraigosa, Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco. Despite his prominence as a megadonor, Steyer has been less successful as a candidate.
