Schumer weakened as Democrats question his future | JQJO

As the nation emerges from its longest shutdown, Chuck Schumer faces rare vulnerability. Eight Democrats broke with him to end a standoff he tried to push past Thanksgiving, as he phoned allies to blame Republicans for rising health costs; some declined. Interviews show growing doubts about his leadership and 2028 plans, even as he zeroes in on retaking the Senate in 2026. Allies defend him; critics including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez say he had “knowledge” of a deal to reopen “in exchange for nothing.” In New York, politicians are already maneuvering for a possible open Senate race.
