House Democrats made a last-ditch bid Monday to extend pandemic-era Obamacare subsidies, as Rep. Glenn Ivey, D-Md., sought unanimous consent during a mostly empty pro forma session to approve the ACA tax credits without a vote. Chair Rep. Adrian Smith, R-Neb., gaveled down the request, blocking the maneuver. The failed attempt underscored Democratic divisions during the shutdown fight, coming after the Senate advanced a bill to reopen the government through Jan. 30. Eight Democrats joined Republicans to move toward ending the 40-day shutdown, with no substantive deal yet on the expiring subsidies.
