On day 39 of the US government shutdown, Donald Trump urged Senate Republicans to redirect Affordable Care Act subsidy funds into direct payments to individuals, arguing people could buy much better coverage and keep money left over. In a social media post, he described current subsidies as money sucking support for insurers. Republican senators Lindsey Graham, Rick Scott and Bill Cassidy welcomed the idea. But reopening the government still requires eight Democratic votes, and replacing Obamacare with savings accounts is unlikely to draw a single Democratic supporter.
