USC quarterback changes number for trick play in win vs. Northwestern. Was it legal?

USC’s 38-17 win over Northwestern featured a sly twist: with the game tied early in the second quarter, a player in No. 80 took a punt snap, then third-string quarterback Sam Huard fired a 10-yard pass to freshman Tanook Hines, jump-starting a touchdown drive. USC had legally listed Huard as No. 80, the same number punter Sam Johnson wears, a move Lincoln Riley said had been in place for weeks. But Fox analyst Mike Pereira argued the play violated NCAA rules and merited a 15-yard penalty. Northwestern’s David Braun accepted blame for being fooled.
