Flights will be cut at 40 U.S. airports starting Friday as regulators pare traffic to maintain safety during the record federal shutdown, now in its 37th day. New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and other major hubs from Atlanta to San Francisco are affected, with reductions beginning at 4% and rising to 10% between 6am and 10pm. Cirium estimates as many as 1,800 flights and 268,000 seats could be lost. With controllers unpaid and shortages of up to 3,000, officials warn of cascading delays as Thanksgiving nears, though American Airlines says most customers will be unaffected.
