New York City votes Tuesday after a turbulent mayoral race pitting Democrat Zohran Mamdani against independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, stunned Cuomo in June’s Democratic primary, then widened his coalition by meeting with police and clarifying he backs decriminalizing, not legalizing, consensual sex work. Cuomo, the former governor who denies the harassment allegations that preceded his 2021 resignation, now courts voters wary of Mamdani and leads among Jewish New Yorkers in recent polls. Sliwa runs a tough-on-crime, subway-riding campaign and refuses to exit.
