Netherlands to return looted Egyptian sculpture

During a visit to Cairo, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said the Netherlands will return a 3,500-year-old stone head to Egypt after officials determined it was looted during the 2011–12 Arab Spring and surfaced at TEFAF Maastricht in 2022. Alerted by an anonymous tip, the dealer surrendered the piece, a museum-quality sculpture of a high-ranking official from the era of Thutmose III. The artifact will be handed to Egypt’s ambassador by year’s end. Schoof’s trip coincided with the Grand Egyptian Museum’s lavish opening, lit by lasers and drones above the pyramids.
