Medieval Rome tower partially collapses during renovation

Read, Watch or Listen

At Rome’s Torre dei Conti, a medieval tower near the Roman Forum, part of the structure collapsed during renovation Monday, seriously injuring at least one worker, Italian media reported. Hundreds of tourists watched as firefighters used a mobile ladder and stretcher to reach the upper level, rescuing three workers while one remained blocked inside. Another section fell mid-rescue, throwing up debris and forcing crews to descend quickly. Built in the 13th century by Pope Innocent III, the tower was damaged in a 1349 earthquake and later collapses. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli were on site.
