Five German climbers died after an avalanche struck as they approached the summit of Cima Vertana in the Ortler range near Solda, Italian authorities said Sunday. The slide swept away two rope teams; the bodies of two men and a woman were recovered Saturday, and a father and his 17-year-old daughter were found Sunday. Two other climbers escaped unharmed. The Ortler massif, near the Swiss border, is a popular draw for experienced hikers and climbers.
