Five German mountaineers were killed when an avalanche struck near Cima Vertana in South Tyrol, rescuers said. Three bodies were recovered Saturday; the remaining two—a man and his 17-year-old daughter—were found Sunday after being swept to a lower gully. Two other men survived and were taken by helicopter to a hospital in Bolzano. The avalanche hit around 4 p.m. at more than 3,500 meters as climbers moved in three independent groups. Crews withdrew amid worsening high-altitude weather. Officials note avalanche accidents remain a persistent risk in the Italian Alps.
