Five German mountaineers were killed by an avalanche in South Tyrol while climbing near Cima Vertana at over 3,500 meters, rescuers said. Three bodies were recovered Saturday; a man and his 17-year-old daughter were found Sunday. Two men survived and were airlifted to a hospital in Bolzano. The victims, traveling in three independent groups, were struck around 4 p.m. Saturday. Alpine rescue spokesman Federico Catania said they had been dragged to the lower part of the gully, and teams were withdrawing as weather worsened at high altitude. Avalanche accidents are a persistent problem in Italy’s Alps.
