Explosion and fire at convenience store kills at least 23 in northern Mexico

At least 23 people, including children, died and 12 were injured after a fire and explosion at a convenience store in downtown Hermosillo, Sonora, officials said. Images showed a massive blaze engulfing a Waldo's outlet, and the injured were taken to local hospitals. Gov. Alfonso Durazo ordered a transparent investigation; the state attorney general said preliminary findings point to deaths from inhalation of toxic gases, with no indication the fire was intentional. President Claudia Sheinbaum offered condolences and sent federal support. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area and canceled Day of the Dead celebrations.
