Judge Permanently Bars Trump From Requiring Proof of Citizenship for Voter Registration

A federal judge in Washington permanently blocked the Trump administration from requiring proof of citizenship on federal voter registration forms, ruling that President Trump’s March executive order violated separation of powers. In an 81-page opinion, Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said only the bipartisan Elections Assistance Commission can change the federal form, and that elections authority rests with states and Congress, not the president. The White House said it will appeal. Democrats and voting rights groups celebrated, noting millions lack such documents and warning the requirement would burden women, service members and the poor.
