Hurricane Melissa, the strongest storm on Jamaica’s record, ripped through Jamaica, Cuba and Hispaniola as a Category 5, leaving raw devastation along Jamaica’s southwest coast. Satellite and aerial images show White House and nearby Black River reduced to dirt and rubble after 185 mph winds slammed ashore Tuesday. Officials confirmed at least four deaths in Jamaica and more than 25,000 people sheltering as power failures left roughly 77% of the island in the dark. Damage assessments are ongoing, and officials say a total communication blackout in some areas is slowing the work.
