A fighter jet and a helicopter from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz crashed into the South China Sea within 30 minutes Sunday afternoon, the Navy’s Pacific Fleet said. All five crew members—two F/A-18F Super Hornet aviators and three MH-60R Sea Hawk sailors—were rescued and are in stable condition. Causes are under investigation. The Nimitz is sailing home to Naval Base Kitsap after a summer deployment to the Middle East and is on its final cruise before decommissioning. Separate recent mishaps also struck the USS Harry S. Truman, none fatal; findings in those cases remain pending.
