Donald Trump departed Washington for a five-day swing through Malaysia, Japan and South Korea, aiming to meet China’s Xi Jinping for high-stakes talks on a bruising trade war. On the way, he expects to see Qatar’s emir to discuss a Gaza ceasefire. In Kuala Lumpur, US and Chinese preparatory talks were described as very constructive as Trump warned 100% tariffs could take effect on 1 November, or rise to 155% without a deal. He left open a meeting with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, while US officials played down plans. Trump will also attend the Asean and Apec summits.
