Sirikit, Thailand’s former queen and widow of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, died Friday night in a Bangkok hospital at 93 from complications of blood sepsis, the royal palace said. Known as the Queen Mother, she had largely withdrawn from public life after a debilitating 2012 stroke. A glamorous and influential consort, she traveled widely with the king, championed Thai handicrafts through the Support Foundation, and later showed sympathy for royalist protesters. Her portraits once hung across the nation; her birthday is marked as Mother’s Day. She is survived by three daughters and a sister.
