Halong Remnants Devastate Western Alaska Communities

Read, Watch or Listen

Remnant storms from Typhoon Halong pounded western Alaska on Oct. 12, with blistering winds and record-high water displacing more than 2,000 people and prompting one of the most significant airlift operations in Alaska history. At least one person is dead and two are missing. In Kwigillingok, Steven Anaver’s home ripped from its foundation and floated roughly a mile as he filmed, later sharing videos with The Associated Press; water rose to his knees in 10 minutes in the night. After 7 a.m., two neighbors in waders helped him out. Days later he posted, "I was inches away from death."
