Florida fired coach Billy Napier a day after an error-strewn 23-21 win over Mississippi State, ending a four-year tenure marked by puzzling calls and sputtering offense. Athletic director Scott Stricklin cited a lack of on-field success as the Gators' crowd booed Napier despite a game-sealing interception. Napier went 22-23 (12-16 SEC), 5-17 vs ranked teams and 3-12 against rivals. Receivers coach Billy Gonzales is interim as Florida (3-4, 2-2) regroups before Georgia on Nov. 1. Napier's buyout is about $21 million; Lane Kiffin and others are expected targets.
