Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy asked the White House for a major disaster declaration after remnants of Typhoon Halong slammed remote villages, flooding communities and displacing more than 2,000 people. In Kipnuk, an initial assessment found 121 homes (about 90%) destroyed; Kwigillingok lost three dozen houses, and over a third of residences there are uninhabitable. One person died, two are missing, and rescuers pulled dozens from drifting homes. Anchorage expects up to 1,600 evacuees; about 575 have arrived at shelters as officials plan short- and long-term housing. Dunleavy warned many won’t return this winter, or for at least 18 months.
