Audio reveals struggle before Michigan test-flight crash

Read, Watch or Listen

Newly released air traffic control audio captures the crew of a Mexican-registered Hawker 800XP repeating “stall recovery” as their jet spiraled toward woods near Lansing, Michigan, killing two pilots and a maintenance representative Thursday. A Cleveland Center controller called seven times with no reply while bystanders filmed the aircraft corkscrewing before a black plume rose beyond nearby homes. The NTSB has opened an investigation. The crash occurred on a test flight following scheduled maintenance by Duncan Aviation. ADS-B data show a climb to 15,000 feet, then a sudden drop—at times 24,000 feet per minute—lasting about a minute.
