Amid rising friction with Venezuela and U.S. strikes on suspected Caribbean drug smugglers, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Adm. Alvin Holsey will retire at year’s end, less than a year after taking over U.S. Southern Command, a post that typically runs three. Reuters reported tensions between Holsey and Hegseth and doubts over his job security ahead of the announcement. The New York Times cited an unnamed official saying Holsey had questioned the mission and attacks on alleged drug boats. Hegseth offered no reason. Holsey began his career through Morehouse College’s NROTC program in 1988.
