Susan Stamberg — an original NPR staffer and the first U.S. woman to anchor a nightly national news program — died Thursday at 87. A revered founding mother of the network, she shaped All Things Considered with a human voice, sometimes knitting at the mic, and stories that ranged from matters of state to cranberry relish. Honored by the National Radio Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she launched the Sunday puzzle and helped put Car Talk on air. She is survived by her son, actor Josh Stamberg, and granddaughters Vivian and Lena.
