UK Publishes China Spy Evidence After Case Collapse

Read, Watch or Listen

Downing Street released three witness statements by deputy national security adviser Matthew Collins amid scrutiny of the collapsed spy case against Christopher Cash and Christopher Berry. Collins said China conducts large-scale espionage, threatening the UK's economic security, prosperity, resilience and democratic institutions, while stressing the government seeks a positive economic relationship with China. The CPS dropped charges last month, saying key evidence couldn't be obtained. After a "cover-up" claim, Keir Starmer pledged publication; documents were released Wednesday night. Collins believed his August 2025 statement met the bar. Both men deny wrongdoing; Cash says he is "completely innocent".
