Mississippi executes Charles Crawford after Supreme Court denial

Read, Watch or Listen

Mississippi executed Charles Crawford, 59, by lethal injection at 6:15 p.m. at the state penitentiary in Parchman for the 1993 abduction, rape and killing of 20-year-old Kristy Ray. On death row for over three decades, Crawford lost a last-minute U.S. Supreme Court appeal, despite a pointed dissent from three justices citing a 2018 ruling on defendants’ rights. State courts had also rejected his claims. Corrections officials said he met family and a preacher beforehand. The execution was the nation’s third in two days; 38 men have been executed so far this year.
