Madagascar’s presidency says an illegal bid to seize power is under way, after the army unit CAPSAT declared it had taken command of the military and named Gen Demosthene Pikulas as chief of staff. The claim comes amid protests that began on 25 September over water and power cuts and have broadened to anger over unemployment, corruption and living costs. Some soldiers joined demonstrators, and reports spoke of a shoot-out at a camp after gendarmerie talks. President Andry Rajoelina condemned the move and urged unity, while the presidency said he and his newly appointed prime minister remain in control.
